Recent research on hubris and related concepts in top managers has opened the "black box" of executive psychology. However, concepts are difficult to define precisely and to measure. We examine the psychological foundations of hubris, narcissism and overconfidence and analyze measures used in existing research. The resulting conceptual clarification leads to recommendations for improving the theoretical basis of concepts used and provides an overview of possible avenues to explore in future research, through the framework of the executive self. We provide insights into ways to improve the measures and suggest tools and methods enabling the capture of executive psychological characteristics.
